Discovery Sports Complex

Construction is underway for the 11-acre Discovery Sports Complex located at 12400 Clark Avenue. The Columbia Memorial Space Science Learning Center is also under construction on the other 2 acres adjacent to the park.

The park will include two lighted baseball/softball 250’ fields, two lighted 150’ X 300’soccer fields, concession stand and restrooms. Discovery Sports Complex will provide a significant enhancement of our city facilities for soccer, baseball and softball. The grass will take at least three months to grow strong enough for play and the park is expected to open in September of 2008.

The Downey City Council selected "Discovery Sports Complex" after conducting a Name the Park Contest. The Council decided on a name that reinforces the history of the site and commemorates half the shuttle fleet which was built on the site in the late 70s and early 80s.

Downey resident, Carmen M. Herrera, made the "Discovery" entry at the encouragement of her children. She submitted "Discovery" because she wants kids to discover the world and discover their surroundings.
