  • Neighborhood Emergency Survival Teams (N.E.S.T.)

The N.E.S.T. program originated in Downey in 1992 and was designed to help fill the potential gap in emergency services by training individuals, families, businesses, and neighborhoods to be completely self sufficient during the first 72 hours after a major disaster. The City of Downey will provide this training free of charge to all who participate in the program. The experience you gain will be valuable, rewarding and, above all, FUN! For those interested in participating, contact Darren Moon, Downey Fire Department at 562-904-7349 or E-mail at

Some helpful information in case of a disaster:

    • Responsible members of the family should know where to reunite after an emergency, if separated.
    • Choose an out of state friend or relative that family members can call to report on their safety and whereabouts. You may not be able to make a local call home, but may be able to place a long distance call. All family calls should report to the same out of state person.

    • Adults need to learn basic first aid and CPR techniques.
    • Every household should be equipped with several "ABC" type dry chemical fire extinguishers.
    • Responsible members of the family should know how to turn off the main gas, water and electricity sources.
    • Every child should carry an ID card with them at all times. The card should include their name, address, home and emergency phone numbers, as well as their parents names and any special instructions.

Pool Safety for the Summer Months As the summer months come upon us, they present some unique problems to the citizens of Downey. As the heat increases, members of our community tend to spend more time in and around their pools. This can create a danger to both children and adults alike.

The City of Downey Fire Department wishes everyone to have a safe and fun summer. Here are some guidelines to follow to insure you and your families safety.
