The City of Downey recently received a $181,090 Rubberized Pavement Grant from the California's Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) for street resurfacing. CalRecycle brings together the state's recycling and waste management programs to promote environmentally-friendly practices. In 1989, Legislature passed the California Tire Recycling Act (Act), which authorized the creation of the Tire Recycling Program and the California Tire Recycling Management Fund. Through this Act, CalRecycle offers the Rubberized-Pavement Grant Program to promote markets for recycled-content surfacing products derived from California-generated waste tires and to decrease the adverse environmental impacts created by the unlawful disposal and stockpiling of waste tires. The City will offset the cost of resurfacing various streets citywide through these funds, using 100% California-generated waste tires, and provide better streets for Downey residents and visitors to enjoy. To date, four completed street projects have diverted the equivalent of over 55,000 passenger tires.
