On Monday, March 7, 2011 at 21:14 hours, a large area of Southwest Downey lost power, including Fire Station #1. The station’s emergency generator was activated and continued to provide power to the Fire Dispatch Center, which fielded several 911 calls concerning the power outage. Some of the callers reported blown transformers, downed power lines, loss of intersection control signals, and a possible structure fire. Downey Fire units investigated and found no significant damage had occurred. High winds in the area may have been the cause of the outage. Edison reported approximately 2,200 residents were affected by the power outage.
