The Downey Cemetery District Trustees will hold the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Downey Cemetery, 9073 Gardendale Street, on Monday, May 30, at 11:00 A.M. The ceremony will feature remarks by the District Trustees; a wreath laying, a rifle salute by American Legion Post 270 and the playing of Taps and is open to everyone.
The historic Downey Cemetery is located south of the Green Line Transit Station on Lakewood Boulevard. A free shuttle service, provided by the Downey Senior and Handicapped Transit service, will take attendees from the Lakewood Boulevard Green Line parking lot to the Cemetery. Parking will not be permitted in the Cemetery. The buses will deliver riders to the Ceremony site and return them to the Green Line parking lot at the conclusion of the program. The Ceremony will take place at the Veteran’s Memorial Wall and garden and will last approximately one hour.
The Downey Cemetery traces its history back to the 1870’s and serves the cities of Downey, Bellflower, Paramount and parts of South Gate. The District is governed by a three member Board of Trustees appointed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe.
