On Sunday, September 12 at 20:52 hours, Downey Engines 61, 62, 63, Truck 611, Squad 641, Rescue 645, Battalion 604, 404 (Compton Fire) and LA County Engine 57 responded to a reported roof fire in the 7900 block of Cole Street. Upon arrival Engine 61 found a deep residential lot with smoke emanating from the rear unit. Downey Police Department, prior to Fire’s arrival, had ensured all residents were safely evacuated. With Truck 611, and LA County Engine 57 assisting, ventilation was performed with Engines 61 and 63 making an interior fire attack. The fire was quickly extinguished without injury to fire personnel. 632 (Investigator Furtado) conducted a Fire Cause and Origin investigation; and during the subsequent investigation and structure assessment, a marijuana grow operation was uncovered. Downey Police processed the crime scene and it was during the investigation unidentified chemicals were found in the grow room. 651 (Hazmat Specialist Kirby) responded to the location and with the assistance of LA County Health Hazmat processed the hazardous materials for identification and safe disposal.
