The next and final phase of the I-5 Freeway Widening Project between the SR-91 and I-605 freeways will occur within the City of Downey. The actual project limits are between the Norwalk city boundary and Florence Avenue. However, construction will extend to the north of the San Gabriel River to properly transition into the existing section of the I-5 Freeway. The project will involve widening the freeway from eight to ten lanes and replacing the Florence Avenue overcrossing with a new bridge. The construction contract for the I-5 Freeway Widening Project between the Norwalk city boundary and Florence Avenue (Segment 5) was awarded on April 24, 2014. The estimated duration of the project is 30 months, with construction scheduled to commence in Feb 2015. Please note that Florence Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Studebaker Road and Orr & Day Road for up to 24 months, beginning in Feb 2016. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes during this timeframe.
