Downey’s Local Measure D & Municipal Election
Voter Information
The Downey City Council placed Measure D – The Downey Public Safety and Local Control Measure -- on the November Municipal ballot for voter consideration.
Downey is one of the few cities in the region to be a full-service City including have its own police and fire departments and without sufficient funding to maintain these services, the look, feel and safety of the community may be impacted. Measure D can help maintain local control of vital services; ensure adequate funding and resources for first responders, parks, road maintenance as well as youth and senior programs and preserve the highest quality of life in the area.
Did you know over 70% of calls to the Downey Fire Department are related to medical emergencies? If enacted, Measure D will help maintain and improve response times and ensure the City is able to recruit and retain well-qualified firefighters, paramedics, as well as ensure they have lifesaving equipment to respond to emergencies and save lives.
The Police Department continues to work hard to keep Downey safe, but similar to other communities in the region, last year saw a five year high in reported property crimes in Downey and in 2023 there were over a combined 3,100 robberies, burglaries and thefts including auto thefts. Measure D funding could help maintain 911 emergency response times and police patrols in neighborhoods and business areas to keep residents and their property safe.
If enacted, Measure D would be a locally controlled ¼ cent sales tax increase to provide funding for resident identified priorities such as maintaining 911 and medical emergency response times, preventing crimes including thefts and burglaries, and helping ensure children have safe places to play.
Downey voters will also have the opportunity to decide on Councilmembers for Districts 1, 3 and 5 in November.
